January 2019 Reflections

Welcome back! We trust you had a restful Christmas and are excited about all that this new year will bring. We are starting 2019 with a week of prayer beginning on Monday 7th with the first of our daily “Take Five” topics. There will be a new “Take Five” every week day and we will end the week with a half night of prayer on Friday 11 January where we will be worshiping and praying from 8:00pm until midnight.

The thought of coming to a half-night of prayer may seem daunting but we encourage you to come along and see how you get on. The bible says “Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord...”
(Lamentations 2:19).

King David wasn’t prepared to bring an offering to the Lord that cost him nothing and we believe that as we give to God in prayer, He will usher in His Kingdom.

Let’s go deeper in prayer together this year. We believe God wants to grow our experience of prayer and our expression of prayer here at Riverside. When the disciples saw Jesus praying, they saw something that captivated them. They said “Lord, teach us to pray…” (Luke 11:1).

The bible talks of prayer being incredibly powerful and effective at bringing change. Hudson Taylor, the founder of the China Inland Mission, resolved to learn how to “move man, through God, by prayer alone…” As his experience of prayer grew, so did his trust in the Father and throughout his ministry he saw God move in incredible and miraculous ways.

Whatever our experience of prayer has been so far, we can all begin this year by saying “Lord, teach us to pray…” Prayer is something we can only grow in as we participate. Let us come before God hungry for change and confident in His ability to bring it.

Every blessing
